Programme Inauguration of PGP 2017-19 Batch
17 July 2017:
The 2017-19 batch of Post Graduate Program in Management of the Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam was inaugurated at the Institute’s campus today by Shri P Madhusudan, the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd.
Shri Madhusudan spoke about the challenges and opportunities in today’s competitive times and how one could achieve success acquiring well-rounded learning in all the management disciplines necessary for the good functioning of any organization. Narrating from his own experiences and driving home his inputs, ideas and insights through short anecdotes, he shared how regular preparation; self-imposed discipline; dedication and commitment; and working in teams that promote synergy, self-confidence, trust and dependability are essential for a professional to progress in personal and professional life.
Congratulating the students who gained admission into the coveted IIMV, Shri Madhusudan urged them to leverage the multiple opportunities available in the Institution, to build their careers on solid foundations. While rigor would of course be a part of the course curriculum at IIMV, the students need to take it in their stride and equip themselves well. Quoting from Swami Vivekananda, he exhorted the students to look at education as a manifestation of perfection. They need to view education from the perspective of character-building, increasing the concentration and strength of mind and expanding their intellect by which they can stand on their own feet and contribute to the industry and the country at large.
Earlier, the Director of the Institute, Professor Chandrasekhar, described in his address how the students could, taking personalities of distinction and eminence like Shri Madhusudan as role-models, learn in their two-year journey at IIMV, the nuances of management such as strategic leadership, cost-reduction, team work with intellectual & emotional commitment and improving profitability.
Internalizing business excellence, building a creative and innovative work culture, progressing from “value-orientation” to “value-creation”, ensuring consistency in performance; growth with goodwill, unlocking the potential of the capital – be it financial, infrastructural, human or social – are some of the mantras that Shri Madhusudan has been successfully practising, which the students could adopt in their careers, acquiring in-depth grounding in the management precepts.
Professor Chandrasekhar exhorted the incoming batch to leverage the advantages of IIMV and pursue holistic learning through a wide bouquet of distinct and diverse opportunities such as international immersion, imaginative pedagogy, innovative curriculum, industry-interface, summer placements etc. He highlighted how IIMV has emerged as a much sought-after source for recruiters, on the lines of established IIMs. He emphasized the importance of students maintaining high competence and good conduct, befitting the image and reputation of IIMV, to win recognition and rewards. It’s only in dictionary that “success” comes before “work”, he observed. He expressed confidence that the new students would emerge as “Navratnas” and “Maharatnas” in their careers.
Earlier, Professor Rajendra Bandi, Professor of Decision Sciences and Chairperson of Admissions for IIM Bangalore and IIM Visakhapatnam shared with the students and their parents, the profile of the new batch. The student cohort represents 19 states and more than 60% of them have upward of one year of experience. 21% of them are girl students. As in the past, a clear majority of students is from engineering background, including from IITs, NITs etc. Describing IIMV as a top-ranked institution among all the new IIMs, Prof. Bandi complimented the students and parents on their choice. He wished the students a bright future ahead.
