Areas of Specialisation

The PhD programme is offered in eight areas: Decision Sciences, Economics, Finance & Accounting, Information Systems, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource Management, Production & Operations Management, and Strategy.

Economics
The Economics area currently has two full-time faculty members complemented by visiting faculties from leading institutions, all with experience in research and teaching. The primary research interests of the faculty lie broadly in two areas, Industrial organization and Microeconomics of firms and households. The areas of research include strategic firm behavior, closed-loop supply chains, product cannibalization, and two-sided matching markets. On the other hand, faculty are interested in understanding the impact of expanding social programs. The research interests span the evaluation of public health programs, evaluating the effects of insurance on household and firm risk and productivity, interlinkages between micro-level productivity and economic growth.

The area is in an advanced stage of expanding its faculty-cohort to diversify its research agenda while being open to the idea of promoting interdisciplinary research in management.

The area will offer doctoral-level courses in the core areas of Economics and Econometrics. Doctoral students will have to take basic research methodology courses (quantitative and qualitative), common for all PhD students, along with area-specific courses like Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Industrial Organization, International Economics, Introductory and Advanced Econometrics. Besides mandatory area courses, the participants would get a chance to select from MBA and PhD electives being offered from the area and other related areas.

Decision Sciences
Decision Sciences area currently has three full-time faculty members complemented by visiting faculty, all with experience in research and teaching. The current research interests (theoretical and applied) of the faculty members in this area include Statistical Inference, Sequential Analysis, Actuarial Science, Game Theory, Behavioural Studies, Mechanism Design, Forecasting Models, Discrete Optimization Problems, Machine Learning, Network Theory.

The doctoral courses that the area plans to offer include Network Theory and its Applications, Time Series Analysis and Forecasting Models, Combinatorial Optimization, Game Theory, among other area-specific courses.

Finance & Accounting
The finance & Accounting area currently has three full-time faculty members complemented by visiting faculties from leading institutions, all with experience in research and teaching. The current research interests lie in the areas of Capital Markets, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Behavioural Finance, Credit Rating, International Financial Reporting Standards, Decision making in Accounting & Auditing, and the interplay between Accounting and Entrepreneurship.

The Institute is in an advanced stage of expanding its faculty-cohort to diversify its research agenda while being open to the idea of promoting interdisciplinary research in management. The area offers many doctoral-level courses in the core areas of Finance & Accounting research. Participants will have to take basic research methodology courses (quantitative and qualitative) along with area courses like Corporate Finance, Capital Markets & Governance Research, Asset Pricing, Accounting Theory & Empirical Research, and Basic & Advanced Econometrics. Apart from the mandatory area courses, the participants would get a chance to select from a battery of electives being offered from the area and other related areas.

Information Systems
The Information Systems area currently has one full-time faculty complemented by various visiting faculty, providing a good combination of research, teaching, and practice. We are also in an advanced stage of expanding our full-time faculty cohort to diversify our research and teaching agenda. The current research interests of the faculty lie in the broad domain of Internet governance which lies at the boundary of the Internet and public policy. Some of the topics under its fold are Internet governance structure, Net neutrality, telecommunications policy, internet shutdowns, etc.

The doctoral courses that the area plans to offer include Information Systems Foundations for Research, Information & Communications Technology for Development, Theoretical Advances in Information Systems. Given that IIMV runs a one-of-its-kind PGP in Digital Governance and Management, the focused courses offered in the program may also draw the interest of doctoral students, especially if they are interested in technology and government interaction.

Marketing
The marketing area has three full-time faculty members with teaching, research, and industry experience. The area also hosts experienced visiting faculty from premier institutes. Faculty members’ research interests include brand management, marketing ethics, retailing, digital marketing, marketing analytics, services marketing, marketing communications, and cross-cultural issues in marketing.

Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource Management
The OB & HRM area currently has three full-time faculty members, complemented by visiting faculty members from other premier institutes across India. The research interests of the area members include work engagement, work-non-work conflict, well-being, job crafting, identity and self, the meaning of work, gender in the workplace, job switching behaviour, HR analytics, artificial intelligence in HRM, and talent management in cross-cultural settings. Besides, faculty members are active in writing teaching cases on relevant management issues. Apart from core courses in the discipline, the Area offers advanced courses in Strategic Human Resource Management, HR Analytics, Negotiation, and Change Management, and doctoral courses in Basic and Qualitative Research Methodology

Production & Operations Management
The Production & Operations Management area currently has three full-time faculty members complemented by visiting faculty, all with experience in research and teaching. The current research interests of the faculty members in this area include Scheduling, Supply Chain Management, Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Inventory Control, Supply Chain Risk Management, Analytics in Sports, Product Allocation for e-Campaigns, Quality Leadership, Sustainable Supply Chain Management and Global Production Networks among others. The doctoral courses that the area plans to offer include Optimisation Theory, O.R. Applications, Advanced Operations Research, Heuristics in Decision Making, Supply Chain Risk, Game Theory, Supply Chain Management, Operations Strategy, Management of Manufacturing Systems.

Strategy
The Strategy area has currently two full-time faculty members with teaching, research as well as industry experience. The institute is in the advanced stages of expanding its faculty-cohort in the area. The area actively promotes interdisciplinary research in management. The current research interest of faculty members in the area include topics such as ownership and firm performance, corporate governance, international management, strategy failures, and innovations. However, the faculty members are open to new and diverse areas of research proposed by the candidates.
