Inauguration of
the NSTL Program
On 15 August 2020, the Institute inaugurated the Certificate Program in Research and Development

(R&D) Management for the Scientists of Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) of the Defence
Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This Program is being offered by IIMV jointly with Insti-
tute of Technology Management (ITM), DRDO. This is a unique program and first of its kind ever offered
by an IIM for DRDO. Shri K S Varaprasad, Distinguished Scientist & DG (HR), DRDO, highlighted the
importance of managerial skills in addition to the technical skills, in his inaugural address. Dr Samir V
Kamat, Distinguished Scientist & DG – NS&M, DRDO, stressed on the importance of Risk Assessment
and Risk Mitigation in his key-note address. Prof M Chandrasekhar, Director IIMV, in his opening remarks,
Dr O R. Nandagopan, Director, NSTL and Shri Sanjay Tandon, Director, ITM in their respective addresses
during the Inaugural Program emphasized the need for continuous learning to attain new capacities and
skills to become ‘Atmanirbhar’, echoing the ideas of our Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.
Shri R Srihari, Scientist G, NSTL delivered the welcome address. Prof B. Srirangacharyulu, Dean & Pro-
gram Director while giving the Program details mentioned that the program will be rich in content and deliv-
ery. He mentioned that Project Management, Concepts of R&D Management, R&D Process, R&D Support
function, Technology Management, Innovation, Risk Management, Organisational Behaviour are some of
the topics being covered in the Program. Prof Deepika Gupta proposed the vote of thanks.
The 3-month course in R&D Management would enhance the capacities of participants in becoming
informed professionals in managing an R&D environment, involving design of systems, development of
technologies, prototypes and products leading to their productionization.The course thus would enrich the
knowledge and skills of participants in planning R&D programs, developing and applying technologies for
utilisation, and managing human and other organisational resources in R&D systems. Classes for the first
batch have started on 20 August 2020.
