The journey of IIM Visakhapatnam began on 17 January 2015 with the laying of the foundation stone by the then Hon’ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Smt. Smriti Irani, in the august presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the then Hon’ble Union Minister for Urban Development and later Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, and the then Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation and current Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri P. Ashok Gajapati Raju, along with several Hon’ble Ministers, Members of Parliament, and distinguished public representatives.

The first academic batch of the flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP 2015–17) was inaugurated in September 2015. Classes commenced on 21 September 2015, with the first regular academic session beginning on 28 September 2015.

In 2017, IIM Visakhapatnam was declared an Institution of National Importance under the IIM Act, 2017.

In 2018, the IIMV Foundation for Incubation, Entrepreneurial Learning and Development (IIMV FIELD) began operations as the Institute’s incubation and startup hub and has since emerged as one of the fastest-growing incubators in India.

In 2019, IIM Visakhapatnam marked a significant milestone in its research journey with the inauguration PhD Program in Finance & Accounting and Production & Operations Management areas.

On 21 May 2023, the Institute welcomed the first batch of the Executive MBA (EMBA) for Working Professionals, strengthening its portfolio of executive education programmes.

On 20 February 2024, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, virtually inaugurated the permanent campus of IIM Visakhapatnam, spread across 241 acres at Gambheeram.

On 7 July 2024, IIM Visakhapatnam welcomed the first batch of the Executive PhD (Exec-PhD) programme, designed to equip working professionals with advanced research capabilities by integrating rigorous theory with practical application.

In January 2025, IIM Visakhapatnam celebrated its 11th Foundation Day, marking over a decade of academic excellence and entrepreneurial leadership. The celebrations were graced by Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D & Chairman, DRDO, as the Chief Guest, and Ms. Malavika R. Harita, Member, Board of Governors, IIM Visakhapatnam & IIM Bangalore, as the Guest of Honour.
